Sato Tokihiro
Sato Tokihiro(佐滕时啟)is a renowned Japanese contemporary photographer. He was born in Sakata, Yamagata, Japan in 1957, and received his MFA and BFA in Sculpture from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1983. Sato is famous for his unique expressions of light and space, and his artistic interpretation of dancing lights. Although Sato was originally a trained sculptor, he decided to choose photography as a medium to better communicate his ideas and has been recognized for his playful interaction with light. Sato uses an 8x10 large-format camera for long exposures that last one to three hours; he adeptly moves the camera during the exposures, creating points and beams of light by flashlight or flashes from reflecting mirrors. The end result is photographs which show highly unique expressions of light. Because of the long exposures, Sato’s movements when crossing the scene remain invisible in the photograph; the photograph captures his essence but not his physical self. Sato’s photographs are collected by public and private museums and academic institutions worldwide, including the Solomon Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA), the Museum of Modern Art (Saitama, Japan), Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (Japan), Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane, Australia), Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo), Shanghai Art Museum (China), Harvard University (USA), and Deutsche Bank.
